The crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. on FM 1849, about two and a half miles east of Bangs. DPS said the child’s father was driving north with two children in the vehicle when a wild animal entered the roadway. The driver swerved to avoid it, causing the car to skid and roll.
Police say the 8-year-old had unbuckled her seatbelt before the crash and was ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A 9-year-old passenger and the driver were not reported to have serious injuries.
In a statement, Brownwood ISD said it was mourning the loss of one of its second-grade students at Coggin Elementary and is providing counseling services to classmates and staff.
