Campbellsville police said around 12:55 p.m. on Wednesday, officers were called to a home at Smith Ridge Road, where they found a woman lying in her front yard with multiple stab wounds.
An arrest citation revealed that the woman’s name was Erica Meredith, who could not tell the police the reason for the assault due to the pain from her injuries. She was taken from the hospital and air-lifted to the University of Louisville Hospital due to the severity of her injuries.
A witness told the police that she lived near the incident and walked outside when she heard two women arguing. She told the police she heard Kayla Thompson, 35, tell Meredith she was going to stab her, but she did not see the stabbing.
In the citation, the police noted that Thompson walked away from the scene after the alleged stabbing before officers arrived. She was found just before 3 p.m. and taken to the Campbellsville Police Department for questioning.
During an interview, CPD said Thompson told them that while she was talking with someone about a cell phone SIM card, Meredith came out and started yelling at her.
As the yelling continued, Thompson claimed that the witness came outside and told the two women not to fight at her house.
CPD wrote in the citation that while moving the fight to the street, Meredith reportedly tried to punch Thompson in the face multiple times, prompting her to pull a box cutter out of her bag.
Thompson then told the police she started swinging the box cutter toward Meredith in an attempt to get her off of her, and she wasn’t sure if the box cutter was open or not. Thompson said she thought the knife only hit Meredith once.
Law enforcement said Thompson claimed she didn’t believe the injury was too bad since she didn’t see any blood
The police said that Thompson was arrested and charged with first-degree assault in connection with the stabbing.
