Washing dishes to making dishes, NOLA chef creates his life’s cookbook

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — At Le Meridien New Orleans, deep in the hotel’s kitchen, a chef looks into the cookbook of his life.

He never saw himself where he is now, he tells WGNO Good Morning New Orleans features reporter Bill Wood.

He is now Executive Chef Tyrone Murillo.

But back when he was studying criminal justice he says, “I was just a college student trying to find my way.”

He had plans to become a lawyer and had a job washing dishes at a restaurant to pay for school.

A chef at that restaurant saw something in him.

Murillo said, “he saw a young Latino employee, passionate at what he was doing, even at something like washing dishes.”

From washing dishes to creating dishes, now he’s the man main in the kitchen.

WGNO celebrates his story during Hispanic Heritage Month.

“Chef Tyron is the first Latino executive Chef I’ve ever worked with in 15 years and also the first one here at Le Meridian,” said Director of Rooms, Maria Robles. “Who else could bring the flavors of Nicaragua into a French inspired menu.”
