LAFAYETTE, La. (
KLFY) — A Lafayette Police officer shot at a vehicle during an attempt to arrest an armed robbery suspect Thursday night, authorities said.
The officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the internal investigation. The officer’s name was not released.
Police responded to a report of an armed robbery in the 3800 block of West Congress Street at approximately 9:25 p.m. Thursday, authorities said. Officers said they encountered a “combative individual” who refused to leave the scene. An officer deployed a Taser, which was ineffective, and the suspect then managed to drive away.
During the effort to arrest the suspect, a Lafayette Police Officer discharged his firearm, striking the suspect’s vehicle. No one was struck or injured, police said.
The suspect was found and arrested. He was evaluated at a local hospital following the Taser deployment and was later booked into the Lafayette Parish jail on charges of resisting an officer and remaining after being forbidden. The suspect’s name was not released.
The Lafayette Police Internal Affairs Unit responded to the scene to investigate. Additional charges related to this incident may be added pending the result of the ongoing investigation, officials said.
