LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and the Arkansas Department of Agriculture announced today that more than 3,000 pounds of sweet potatoes were delivered to Marion School District last week.
According to a spokesperson, approximately 30 inmates from the Arkansas Department of Corrections harvested 3,100 pounds of sweet potatoes at Matthews Sweet Potato Farm in Wynne.
The Farm-to-School pilot program was created through Governor Sanders’ Faith-Based Initiatives Office in partnership with the Arkansas Department of Corrections, Department of Agriculture, and Department of Education, officials said.
Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the program provides fresh, nutritious food for students and supports local communities.
Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture Wes Ward said the pilot shows how farmers, state agencies, and schools can work together.
Arkansas Secretary of Corrections Lindsay Wallace said the department is pleased to assist with the harvest.
Marion School District Child Nutrition Director Melissa Lace said the program helps students eat healthy and supports academic success.
Any unused produce may be donated to food pantries under the Good Neighbor Act, officials said.
