PLAQUEMINES PARISH, La. (WGNO) — A driver has been arrested in connection with a crash that left a Gretna passenger dead in Plaquemines Parish.

On Wednesday, Oct. 1, the Louisiana State Police reported that troopers responded to a crash on Louisiana 39 near Water Plant Road

around 6:20 a.m.

LSP officials said an initial investigation showed that a GMC was heading south on LA 39 when it ran off the road and overturned.

The passenger, identified by the LSP as 56-year-old Ryan Riley, suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the GMC, later identified by the LSP as 48-year-old Sherold Manuel, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

According to the LSP, Riley and Manuel were unrestrained at the time of the crash.

On Friday, Oct. 3, LSP officials announced that Manuel was arrested in connection with the crash.

According to the LSP, “During the investigation, Troopers discovered that the GMC Manuel was driving had been stolen in New Orleans in August 2024.”

Manuel was booked into the Plaquemines Parish Jail and faces charges of negligent homicide, possession of a stolen vehicle, careless operation, no seatbelt and other traffic violations.
