Interim Jackson Police Chief and Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said officers responded to a crash in the 2800 block of Lakewood Drive on October 2, 2025.
According to Jones, the primary crime scene is believed to be a residence at the intersection of Lakewood Drive and McDowell Road. Investigators believe a 19-year-old approached an individual at the home and stole a vehicle.
Jones said a shootout occurred between the suspect and the victim. He said the 19-year-old was shot in the head. The suspect was found deceased inside the overturned vehicle.
Jones said the victim was shot in the leg and was transported by a private vehicle to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.
The 19-year-old and the injured victim have not been identified.
Police recovered one weapon at the scene, and they’re seeking the second weapon.
