Robeson County deputies, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Hope Mills police officers, ATF, and DEA agents, and US Marshals conducted a search warrant in the 400 block of Ice Cream Drive in the St. Pauls area at about 1 p.m. Thursday, according to the sheriff’s office. When they arrived, the suspect came out of the camper with a rifle and fired multiple rounds at the investigators.
The suspect, whose name was not immediately available, then fled back into the camper after investigators returned fire, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities attempted to contact the people in the camper for more than an hour and after several unsuccessful attempts, tear gas was deployed into the camper.
A woman exited the camper, and when authorities entered, they found one suspect dead and another suspect was taken into custody, according to the sheriff’s office.
The NCSBI has been asked to investigate the shooting. No additional information was immediately available.
