UDOT wraps up safety upgrades along Provo Canyon

PROVO, Utah (ABC4) — The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has wrapped up their second phase of improvements along Provo Canyon.

According to a press release, UDOT said crews cleaned out and reinforced drainage systems along US-189 to prepare canyon drivers for the upcoming season of ice, snow and water.

Provo has been in the spotlight for a series of road improvements following mudslides caused due to the Buckley Draw Fire. UDOT has also announced a new project to replace aging structure on University Avenue Bridge.

Along US-189, between Canyon Glen Park and Vivian Park, UDOT said crews worked on replacing the median barrier with a stronger concrete design, upgrading crash cushions and improving drainage systems.

“Safety comes first and we’re always looking for practical solutions to apply to our roads, especially in the canyons,” UDOT Region Three Project Manager Craig Hancock said. “Crash cushions are a great way to protect everyone on the road while also being considerate of taxpayer dollars.”

Crash cushions act like an accordion when struck. According to UDOT, they compact immediately on impact to slow the vehicle and reduce the severity of injuries.

This project was the second phase of an ongoing effort to improve safety along US-189 in Provo Canyon.
