“If you look at 30 over the last year in Pennsylvania, that is clearly an issue,” said Fritzi Schreffler, a PennDOT spokesperson.
It is an issue that’s occurred throughout parts of the Midstate.
The latest incident happened Sunday night in Northumberland County, just outside our viewing area.
“It is always sad to hear something about a community that really is a very peaceful community,” Schreffler said.
She told abc27 News there is a variety of factors which can cause these crashes.
“It is typically not the fault of the buggy driver,” Schreffler said. “But impairment, speed, distractions, absolutely all play a part into those incidents.”
She added there is a driver’s manual for the Amish, “to help them understand what our signs are, what are the traffic signals, what are our speed limits on the streets, shoulders, things like that, just so that they’re aware.”
But she said automobile drivers should also be aware of them on the roads.
Plus, she reminded the public to be mindful of the horses. Honking your horn or speeding up can scare them and cause an unfortunate incident.
