New California driver’s license features updated design, security features

(KRON) — The next time you renew your driver’s license at the DMV, you may notice some changes. On Wednesday, the California Department of Motor Vehicles announced changes to state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.

The ID cards’ new look, according to the DMV, features the “unique beauty of the state’s landscape” along with “advanced security measures and updated technology.” The cards feature a new backdrop design that showcases redwood trees, poppies, and coastline, along with the familiar state bear insignia.

Security-wise, the cards feature enhanced anti-counterfeit elements, an added digital security signature that is the first of its kind, and two bar codes on the back. The magnetic strip on the back of existing cards is also going way.

If you just renewed your driver’s license last year, don’t worry. Current driver’s licenses and ID cards will remain valid until their expiration date, despite the introduction of the new cards.

“The new cards use next generation technology to enhance security and with a design that shows California’s iconic redwoods, poppies and coastline,” said DMV Director Steve Gordon. “While I know some of our customers will want the new version of the driver’s license, there is no need to replace an existing license or identification card until your current one expires.”

The fee for an upgraded driver’s license remains at $45. ID cards are $39.
