Man fatally shot son to stop domestic attack on southern Minnesota farm, sheriff says

Authorities in southern Minnesota are sharing new details about a fatal shooting last week that left one man dead.

KAAL-TV reports that 45-year-old Joshua Petersen was at his parents’ farm in Alden — just west of Albert Lea near the Iowa border — on Sept. 24 when he was fatally shot.

According to the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office, Petersen was hiding in an outbuilding and then attacked his mother with a metal pipe when she tried to enter.

At that point, Petersen’s father came to help and was also attacked, as was Petersen’s brother.

During the attack, the sheriff’s office says Petersen’s father shot him with a pistol and the other family members called 911.

Petersen died from his injuries. His family members received treatment for their injuries and his parents were transported to a hospital.

His family members all cooperated with investigators, according to the sheriff’s office.

The investigation is still active but the sheriff’s office says it will forward all reports and evidence to prosecutors for consideration of potential charges when the investigation is complete.
