Government Shutdown: Louisiana Legislators React

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Reacting along party lines, Louisiana’s congressional delegation is speaking out against the government shutdown, pointing fingers in the process, but also saying they’ll help people in our state who are affected by the shutdown.

Congresswoman Julia Letlow released a statement saying she’s assisting constituents with any needs they might have due to the government shutdown. Congressman Troy Carter, D-La., says Democrats want Republicans in Congress to focus on supporting a bipartisan agreement.

“Let’s make sure that the American people have access to affordable health care, that we’re not putting their lives and their health at risk over party politics,” said Carter.

Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., insists the GOP will stand firm with provisions passed in the Big Beautiful Bill.

“They want to reinstitute the ability for public funds to be used for surgeries for children, to change their sexes, the transition, if you will,” said Cassidy.

Cassidy further explains that a prolonged government shutdown would have critical impacts on Louisiana during hurricane season, as a lapse in federal funding could delay disaster recovery.

“The National Flood Insurance Program, if you are about to close on a house and you’re required to have a flood insurance policy, you’re not going to be allowed to close on your house,” said Cassisy.

As lawmakers on Capitol Hill continue to negotiate, federal workers remain caught in the crossfire. Military personnel and TSA employees, for example, are still required to report to work. Both groups will receive pay retroactively.

At this time, the shutdown will not affect the National Guard troop deployment to Louisiana.
