FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) — A driver was charged in connection with a fiery crash on the Capital Beltway in Fairfax County that left multiple people hospitalized.

Virginia State Police (VSP) announced Tuesday that George W. Shuey IV, 36, of Burke, was charged with reckless driving. They noted that additional charges are pending consultation with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

The charges stemmed from the crash that occurred on the night of Sunday, Sept. 28, on Interstate 495 after a group was reportedly driving recklessly.

The Crash

According to state police, just minutes before 11 p.m., troopers were notified that multiple vehicles were driving recklessly on I-495 south near Braddock Road. While en route to the area, VSP was notified that a 2020 McLaren 720S had side-swiped a Honda, causing the car to flip multiple times.

Troopers noted that after the McLaren 720 hit the Honda, it slammed into something on I-495 and went over the guardrail before landing on South Van Dorn Street. Two people, who were not wearing seatbelts, were ejected from the luxury car, and it caught fire, detailed the police.

Once on the scene, two troopers pulled the passenger of the car away from the fire.

Shuey and the passenger were both hospitalized with serious injuries. The driver of the Honda was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
