DMV businesses offer discounts to federal workers during government shutdown

ARLINGTON, Va. (DC News Now) — Local businesses in the DMV are helping to lift the spirits of those impacted by the government shutdown. 

Bars, restaurants, and even doggy daycares are offering discounts and deals to help federal workers.

For many, the government shutdown is a reason to pour a glass.

“We just felt that federal workers have had a tough time of it as of late,” said Wine Cork Bar Owner Diane Gross.

Businesses across the DMV are stepping up to offer federal workers discounts and deals to get them through. 

“We wanted to show a little love for them,” said Gross. “And they make our city so strong.”

Cork Wine Bar is extending its happy hour, offering wine for under $8 and snacks for under $7.

“We want them to know that we support them,” said Doug Tuttle of Hard Rock Cafe, Washington, D.C. “We’re on their side, and we really want them to feel comfort and peace and know that the city is behind them. Because we know who drives the city.”

Hard Rock Cafe Washington, D.C. is offering happy hour all day and a $12 lunch for federal workers with an ID. 

“Like I said, community coming together to support federal workers,” said Darleen Rapp, who is a mother of federal workers. “Nobody else is.”

Even federal workers’ furry friends are covered, as Colby’s Dogcare and Spa is deferring dues for membership until the shutdown is over. 

“Our folks have stuck with us when we had challenges,” said Colby’s Dogcare & Spa Owner Michael Pastreich. “And we’re sticking with them when they have challenges.”

Compass Coffee is also offering federal workers a free pastry with any coffee purchase.
