A “rapidly evolving” search for the suspect involved a chopper and drone and prompted shelter-in-place protocols for afterschool programs and sports practices on several Windsor Unified School District campuses.
Windsor Police said deputies responded to the incident at 2:58 p.m. in the area of Arata and Elsbree lanes in Windsor and located the stabbing victim.
Police said the victim identified the suspect as a transient man named Daniel Tirado Gonzalez, 37. They told police that the suspect had attacked them and took off with the vehicle they were traveling in.
“As the victim was being transported, deputies located the vehicle on Vinecrest Road,” said police in a social media post. “Unable to see inside the vehicle, deputies requested assistance from Henry-1 and a drone to assess the situation. Tirado Gonzalez was still believed to be in possession of the knife and considered armed and dangerous. A Nixle alert was issued to notify the public and aid in locating him.”
Police said community members later tipped them off to Gonzalez’s location, and he was taken into custody without incident at the intersection of Pleasant Avenue and Old Redwood Highway.
The motive and circumstances behind the incident are not yet known.
“Due to the severity of the crime,” the case was handed over to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault unit, confirmed police.
Gonzalez was booked into Main Adult Detention Facility in Santa Rosa where he faces charges of attempted murder, domestic violence, and making criminal threats.
“This was a rapidly evolving incident, and we commend the efforts of Windsor Police deputies, Sonoma Sheriff deputies, the Sonoma County Fire District, Henry-1 (helicopter unit), and WUSD staff for their swift actions in ensuring the safety of students and the public,” added police.
