According to the Office of Gov. Josh Stein, the grants were awarded to nonprofit Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters that are providing housing repair and reconstruction projects to the state’s western region, which was devastated by Helene last September.
The governor’s office said the following nonprofits received grants:
According to the governor’s office, the grants were made available through House Bill 47, which provides additional appropriations to communities and citizens impacted by Helene. The North Carolina General Assembly added $18 million to the program to support volunteer organizations.
An additional $6 million in grants was split between Baptists on Mission and Habitat for Humanity, which have completed repairs on more than 500 homes in western North Carolina, according to the governor’s office.
“More than a year has passed since Hurricane Helene, and we are fortunate that so many volunteer organizations have stepped up to help their neighbors in need,” Stein said in a statement. “Their tireless work is critical to our ongoing efforts to get western North Carolinians back in their homes.”
Emergency Management Director Will Ray said in a statement, “Our volunteer organization partners are part of the State Emergency Response Team precisely because of their unwavering support of the 10.8 million people who call North Carolina home, including the 3.5 million people in the western region of our state. We appreciate the legislature helping to support the operations of these crucial partners in the recovery process.”
