The study analyzed U.S. Census Bureau data from the country’s 25 largest cities to determine where bilingualism is most prevalent. Bilingual residents were defined as those who speak a language other than English at home and report speaking English ‘very well.’
The study revealed that about 20% of people in the United States are bilingual, with Spanish being the second most spoken language in the country. Texas has four of the top ten most bilingual cities, including El Paso, which merged as the most bilingual city in the United States.
In El Paso, nearly 7 in 10 residents speak a language other than English, and 39% of its population is bilingual. Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in this Texas city, spoken by 67% of residents.

On the other end of the spectrum, Detroit, Michigan, is the least bilingual city in the country, followed by Indianapolis, Indiana, and Nashville, Tennessee. Just 11% of Detroit residents speak a language other than English, and only 6% are bilingual, with Spanish being the most common language spoken by 7% of the population.
