According to the City of Southport, 64-year-old Joy Rogers of Southport; 56-year-old Michael Durbin of Galena, OH; and 36-year-old Solomon Banjo of Charlottesville, VA were killed in the shooting.

“Joy was a devoted wife to her husband and a loving mother of three. Born and raised in California, she and her family moved to Southport just a year ago to enjoy their retirement. In that short time, she touched countless lives in her community. Joy loved Jesus deeply, and because of that, she loved others deeply. She lived up to her name—her spirit radiated joy, light, and kindness everywhere she went. Joy had a special gift for making people feel seen and welcomed. She was truly a vibrant part of the community and her family, and she will be dearly missed.”

The deadly incident took place at the American Fish Company, located near the Southport Yacht Basin, around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. According to Southport police, 40-year-old Nigel Max Edge is suspected of shooting from his boat into the restaurant and bar. He then fled on the Intracoastal Waterway to Oak Island, where he was arrested by the U.S. Coast Guard.

In addition to the three people who were killed, five others were injured in the shooting.

Edge, of Oak Island, appeared in Brunswick County Court Monday and was denied bond. He is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first degree murder and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

The accused shooter is a former U.S. Marine who was last stationed at Camp Lejeune, according to records. In a press conference Sunday, Southport Police Chief Todd Coring said the attack was “highly premeditated” and “targeted,” while Oak Island Police Chief Charlie Morris said Edge was someone who was known to police, but did not elaborate.

Edge’s next court date is scheduled for Oct. 13 in Brunswick County.
