‘Look in the mirror’: How to prepare for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Domestic Violence Awareness Month begins Wednesday, and the Marjaree Mason Center says this is a time to reflect and take a close look at the relationships around you.

“Look in the mirror and say what kind of person I am, what kind of partner am I being? And if we can all do that during the month of October, I think that’s a win for everybody,” Marjaree Mason Center CEO Nicole Linder said.

Each year, the nonprofit provides services to more than 8,500 adults and children across Fresno County.

“I think the number is indicative of the need. And I do truly believe it’s greater than that number,” Linder explained.

Over the past nine years, Linder has played a pivotal role in the organization’s growth and in strengthening its impact across the community. One of her key initiatives is prevention.

While the worst outcome of domestic violence is death, Linder sees firsthand how their mission is saving lives.

“What makes me proud is I feel like people are reaching out for help sooner.”

Another milestone is the grand opening of the Isnardi Foundation Building, which houses a slew of resources, including the 24/7 crisis helpline.

“This was an investment intentionally to say we need to open up things like mental health services, crisis support, restraining orders, trainings, and group therapy beyond the walls of a shelter. And really expand that to make sure that everybody in the community had the ability to access those crisis, intervention, and preventative type of activities that we have here.”

Linder is proud of what she and her team have accomplished over the years, but says now it’s time to pass the baton, “to infuse their own ideas and energy and creativity into making this organization a better place.”

The board of directors will begin the search to fill her shoes. And while Linder isn’t sure what’s next, she says she’s looking forward to just spending more time with family.

“I’m really excited to see what’s in the future of the organization, and I’ll be cheering them along the way.”

If you or someone you know needs help, the Marjaree Mason Center offers a confidential, 24/7 emergency helpline at 559-233-HELP (4357).
