How the government shutdown affects Louisiana and flood insurance

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The Louisiana Department of Insurance says that since Congress missed the deadline to renew the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), no new flood policies can be issued or renewed for now.

Existing policies are still valid until they expire, and claims will still be paid as long as funds last. LDI said some sales in flood zones may be delayed without coverage, but private insurance could be an option.

What does this mean for Louisiana?

Before the shutdown, U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy used his time on the floor to address the impacts on the Louisiana residents who rely on the NFIP.

Louisiana has some of the highest flood risks in the country. The biggest impact is on home sales and closings in flood zones, which cover large parts of Louisiana.

If a buyer needs flood insurance to close on a home, the sale may be delayed or fall through until NFIP is reauthorized, unless private flood insurance is used instead.
