Troopers in Henderson said scammers are reaching out to victims through unsolicited texts demanding payment for services.
According to a news release, the scammers are using real funeral home names and names of real people associated with the facility.
“These messages are fraudulent. Funeral homes do not request or process payments through text messaging. Scammers are using fear and sensitive circumstances to pressure individuals into sending money or disclosing financial information,” KSP said.
Troopers recommend people not to respond to unexpected texts requesting payment and contact the funeral home directly using a verified phone number.
People should also never share personal or financial information over text.
Anyone who receives a suspicious message is asked to contact authorities or the Office of the Kentucky Attorney General at 502-696-5389 or 888-432-9257.
