DMV welcomes new CA driver license and ID with advanced designing and security features
The DMV announced this update on Wednesday, stating the current driver’s licenses and ID cards will remain valid until they expire.
“The new cards use next-generation technology to enhance security and with a design that shows California’s iconic redwoods, poppies and coastline,” DMV Director Steve Gordon said. “While I know some of our customers will want the new version of the driver’s license, there is no need to replace an existing license or identification card until your current one expires.”
DMV officials said the CA DL and ID cards are updated periodically to focus on improving security. The last update that was made was in 2010; however, the look of the card changed in 2018 to implement the Real ID.
The DMV is adding images showing “California’s natural beauty” to the design, focused on enhancing anti-counterfeit elements and other features. Officials said the DMV is adding a digital security signature to one of the two barcodes on the back of the cards.
DMV officials said California will be one of the first states to add this kind of digital signature. In addition, the new cards will no longer have the magnetic strip on the back.
The DMV provides steps on what to do before going to an office, since most places do not require an office visit.
