The Indiana Department of Correction confirmed to FOX59/CBS4 that the facility received 15 detainees on Wednesday. Now that the Indiana DOC’s agreement with ICE to detain hundreds of undocumented immigrants is in effect, the facility is set to receive as many as 100 detainees this week.
Dozens of faith leaders held a prayer vigil outside the facility in protest on Monday. The Trump Administration has referred to the Miami Correctional Facility as the “Speedway Slammer.” IndyCar has since requested that federal immigration authorities refrain from using its branding.
In August, Indiana Gov. Mike Braun said IDOC would collaborate with ICE to make as many as 1,000 beds available at the facility. At this time, it remains unclear how many detainees the facility will end up holding.
