“The ICE Facility in Portland was attacked again last night. In fact, it, and other Federal Buildings, are being attacked on a nightly basis,” the president said in a text to the governor Saturday morning.
“We can’t have this. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” he said.
Messages obtained through a records request by KOIN 6 News show that the Governor said she would try calling him later and his assistant thanked her. But in the next message Gov. Kotek said she had just learned that troops had been called to Portland.
“I just received your notice to mobile the Oregon National Guard outside of my control. I believe this is unlawful and unwarranted,” Kotek said in the text message.
“You broke your promise to speak with me before taking further action against Portland,” she said. “I will be in touch later.”
An assistant sent a text response from the president:
“I notified you to get things in order, and you didn’t. They attacked our ICE Patriots last night, and at other times,” Trump said. “If you get your State in order, we don’t come in, but everyone knows that Portland has been an unmitigated disaster for years. I won’t let that happen in America!”
It remains unclear what the President was referring to regarding the alleged attack on ICE agents.
Text messages between Gov. Kotek and senior staff members show they also checked with Portland Police, who were only aware of one misdemeanor arrest. There was also a report of a laser pointer aimed at a helicopter.
As KOIN 6 News previously reported, the Federal Bureau of Investigation Portland Division announced Monday afternoon that four undocumented immigrants were detained after one of them allegedly pointed a laser at a Customs and Border Protection helicopter Saturday night.
It is not clear what the CBP helicopter was being used for.
