Squirrel and rabbit hunting seasons open in Louisiana, how to participate

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has announced that the squirrel and rabbit hunting seasons will begin across Louisiana.

Starting Saturday, Oct. 4, and running until Feb. 28, 2026, this annual event offers outdoor sportsmen the opportunity to partake in a highly popular event.

To participate in these hunting seasons, participants 18 years old or older must possess a basic hunting license.

Hunters are encouraged to take advantage of the many public lands managed by the LDWF, which offer a range of hunting opportunities at relatively low costs.

Those planning to hunt within LDWF Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) must obtain a WMA access permit and adhere to check-in and check-out protocols.

It is important to note that all visitors to LDWF WMAs aged 18 and over must hold one of the following: a WMA Access Permit, a Senior Hunting/Fishing License, a Louisiana Sportsman’s Paradise License, or a Lifetime Hunting/Fishing License.

This ensures compliance with the regulations and supports wildlife conservation efforts throughout the state.
