Ralph Menzies: Attorneys ask for new MRI prior to second competency evaluation

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The attorneys for Death Row inmate Ralph Leroy Menzies have filed a motion requesting a new brain MRI.

In a new motion, the defense team for Ralph Menzies is asking for permission to transport him to the University of Utah hospital and for a new MRI of his brain.

Under the filed motion, Menzies’ attorneys stated that his health has declined significantly and noted that Menzies “is now almost completely unable to walk, even with the assistance of a walker.”

Additionally, the motion stated that Menzies can’t dress himself, can’t lift his legs to get into bed, and has limited use of his right arm. Reportedly, experts hired by Menzies’ legal team have suggested an MRI in order to assess these changes.

The MRI may also determine whether or not Menzies has had additional strokes, which may have affected his competency and could fully prevent an execution.

Originally, Menzies was set to be executed on September 5. However, the Utah Supreme Court stayed his execution and ruled that Menzies’ defense team had proved that he had considerable decline in health and his competency needed to be re-evaluated.

Menzies was granted a second competency hearing, which will take place from December 9 through December 12, 2025, and which will be used to determine whether or not Menzies is competent enough to be executed.

The State of Utah filed a response stating that they do not oppose the motion, so long as it does not affect Menzies’ second competency evaluation proceeding. They stated that the state “acknowledges that the MRI may be relevant to the competency evaluations but otherwise does not stipulate to the reasons Menzies has given for the MRI.”

The MRI would take place by the end of October.

Who is Ralph Menzies?

On February 23, 1986, Maurine Hunsaker was abducted from the Gas-A-Mat convenience store and gas station in Kearns, Utah, where she was employed. Her husband called the convenience store and went in person when she did not pick up. When he arrived, he found that Hunsaker was missing, along with her purse.

According to documents, Hunsaker called the home phone and told her husband that she had been instructed to tell him she was kidnapped and robbed. A police officer spoke with Hunsaker, and she indicated that the kidnapper intended to release her.

Days later, on February 25, 1986, a hiker found Hunsaker deceased near a picnic area in Big Cottonwood Canyon. She had been strangled to death, according to the medical examiner, and her throat was cut. Marks on her wrists and scuffing on a nearby tree indicated that she had been tied to it somehow.

During this time, Menzies was booked into jail on an unrelated burglary charge. When officers were taking his possessions, Menzies ran away and hid in a changing room. Later, identification cards were located in the changing room’s hamper, and an officer realized that they belonged to Hunsaker.

Witnesses further connected Menzies to the disappearance and murder of Maurine Hunsaker, and some had even seen him with her on the night of her murder. In 1988, a jury found Menzies guilty, and he was placed on death row for the serious and senseless crime.
