Photos show first snowfall, changing of leaves at Mammoth Lakes

The first snow of the year has fallen at Mammoth Lakes and at Mammoth Mountain.

Photos shared with KTLA on Tuesday showed a light blanketing of snow at the Mammoth Mountain ski area McCoy Station, as well as a dusting of powder on the mountain as seen from the nearby lake.

The snowfall comes as fall leaves reach peak levels of transformation near the Mono County town and ski resort.

Vibrant oranges and reds are visible at Horseshoe Lake within the Mammoth Lakes basin area.

Those interested in seeing the fall colors at their peak are urged to make a trip to the Mammoth Lakes area soon before the golden yellow leaves drop for good and the area welcomes another snowy winter.

Mammoth Lakes has a fall colors tracker on its website that is updated weekly.

Areas that are currently at peak color transformation include Sagehen Summit at Benton Crossing and Highway 120 East.

South Lake, Weir Pond and Lake Sabrina in the Bishop area are also at or near-peak colors, with leaf-spotters encouraging those interested in seeing the colors make an effort to get there as quickly as possible.

Much of the region tracked by Mammoth Lakes and Visit Mammoth is only beginning to turn into its fall bouquet. Those who make the trek up to the mountains to catch a glimpse are urged to “recreate responsibly,” leave no trace, and not block roads or park on vegetation.
