Louisiana National Guard to deploy up to 1,000 troops statewide

NEW ORLEANS (WNTZ) – The Louisiana National Guard (LANG) is preparing to deploy up to 1,000 Guardsmen across the state in support of local and state law enforcement agencies, pending federal approval of Title 32 USC 502(f) funding, officials announced Tuesday.

According to Maj. Gen. Thomas C. Friloux, Louisiana’s adjutant general, the Guard is already coordinating with law enforcement partners in several major urban areas to develop preliminary operational plans. Each deployment, he said, will be tailored to the unique needs and challenges of individual communities.

“No two Louisiana areas or cities are the same, and each will require a specific operational approach,” Friloux said. “The LANG is the home team, made up of Louisiana sons and daughters. We will carry out our duties with honor and treat all with dignity and respect. Protecting our citizens from crime fits within our primary mission.”

LANG members are trained to assist local, state, and federal agencies during emergencies and public safety operations. The Guard has decades of experience working alongside parish and municipal governments, providing security and logistical support during hurricanes, natural disasters, and major public events.

Placement of troops throughout the state would not only strengthen law enforcement capabilities but also improve the Guard’s ability to respond quickly to natural disasters. Under Title 32 status, Gov. Jeff Landry and Maj. Gen. Friloux would retain command authority, allowing Guardsmen to pivot between emergency response and public safety missions as needed.

“Providing security for the citizens of Louisiana is not a new mission for LANG,” Friloux said. “One of the first critical tasks during hurricanes is to secure key infrastructure and property.”

This year alone, the Louisiana National Guard has supported law enforcement in several high-profile operations, including the New Year’s terrorist attack response, Super Bowl LIX security operations, and Mardi Gras public safety support.

Officials said the pending deployment reflects a proactive strategy to address crime while maintaining readiness for hurricane season and other state emergencies. Once federal funding is approved, deployment plans are expected to advance quickly in coordination with local law enforcement agencies.
