During his presentation, Dr. Kuhn explained the purpose and potential impact of the VATRE, which the Abilene ISD Board of Trustees called on August 14. If approved, the measure would provide the district with more than $10 million in additional annual funding, including $3.7 million from local sources and $6.3 million in state funding.
Dr. Kuhn emphasized how the additional funds could support staff compensation, classroom resources, and student programs. He also took time to answer questions from attendees during a Q&A session following his remarks.
“The second-best time to plant a tree is right now. That’s where we are,” Kuhn shared. “I got here and as soon as we really got into the budget and realized we’re fixing to adopt a $12.9 million deficit, I told the board we have to cut spending and we have to seek revenue.”
Community members were encouraged to explore additional information about the VATRE and how funds would be used by visiting Abilene ISD’s official channels ahead of the November election. You can also click here to watch an hour-long explainer on school finance from AISD.
AISD plans to hold 100 public meetings until November 4 to inform and educate the public on the Voter Approval Tax Ratification Election.
