In retro news, I’m celebrating the 38th birthday of the mighty Sega Master System. I somehow pleaded my way into one of these when this oversized oblong started to be bundled with two controllers, a light phaser, and two games (Hang On and Safari Hunt). Boasting newer, improved hardware compared to its worthy NES rival, Sega’s 8-bit beast seized a significant market share lead in Oz (a feat not replicated in more important markets like Japan and North America). What is your easiest, cheapest, and most reasonably authentic way to experience the Master System vibe today? Buy the modern remaster of Alex Kidd in Miracle World. Everybody owned it.

Nice Savings for Nintendo Switch

On Switch, I have fond memories of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which finally broke the mould with semi-open areas and monster catching that felt alive in a way the series had never nailed before. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is still a party staple at my place and remains the only game where you can watch Solid Snake throw hands with Pikachu.

• Zelda: Link’s Awakening (-13%) – A$69.90 Proof that you can polish a 1993 relic into toy-box perfection. Short, sweet and a little weird.
• Dragon Ball Fighterz (-46%) – A$49 The closest you’ll get to yelling “KAMEHAMEHA” at your mates without losing friendships. Slick, stylish and anime-accurate chaos.
• Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled (-34%) – A$45.90 For those who think Mario Kart’s too friendly. Tougher tracks, brutal shortcuts and plenty of “who just bombed me?!” moments.

Exciting Bargains for Xbox

Over on Xbox Series X, Mafia: The Old Country impressed me with its meticulous period detail and narrative grit, the developers even studied 1930s radio broadcasts for accuracy. Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is an indie darling I return to often thanks to its pitch-perfect retro platforming and constant stream of free expansions.

• Mafia: The Old Country (-23%) – A$69 This mobster tale is less Scarface, more slow-burn HBO drama. Suits, cigars and lots of dramatic staring into the middle distance.
• Dying Light 2: Stay Human (-81%) – A$19 Parkour, zombies and more rooftop cardio than a CrossFit session. The story wobbles, but the price is undead cheap.
• Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove (-53%) – A$27 The indie mascot that refuses to die. All expansions bundled in, meaning you’re basically swimming in retro goodness.
• Scarlet Nexus (-78%) – A$20.70 Anime hair, psychic powers, and enemies that look like furniture came alive. It’s gloriously bonkers.
• Gotham Knights (-83%) – A$19 The Bat is dead, so it’s the sidekicks’ time to shine. Janky, but fun if you bring friends (and lower expectations).

Xbox One

• Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 (-59%) – A$28.60 Kickflips, grind rails and Superman blasting through the speakers. If you played it in 2000, your thumbs already know what to do.
• Assassin’s Creed Origins (-67%) – A$33.40 Egypt looks stunning, the combat’s fresh, and there’s an eagle you can control. Sorry pigeons, you’ve been replaced.
• The Quarry (-85%) – A$15 A teen horror flick you get to break. Everyone can die, everyone can live. Perfect Friday-night popcorn gaming.

Pure Scores for PlayStation

On PS5, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a game I lost myself in for hours, mostly because the pawn system delivers AI partners that feel surprisingly competent. Tales of Arise is another gem, its battle system blending frantic combos with gorgeous anime flair that makes every fight sing.

• Dragon’s Dogma 2 (-37%) – A$67.80 Massive monsters, dark dungeons and pawn pals who won’t stop yelling “Wolves hunt in packs!” It’s Capcom’s weirdest RPG. And that’s saying something.
• Armored Core 7 (-65%) – A$34.90 From the Elden Ring devs, but instead of swords you get a mech with 47 guns. Faster than it has any right to be.
• Octopath Traveler II (-36%) – A$54.40 Retro RPG flair, gorgeous pixel art, and a cast who all think their story is the main one. Spoiler: some are more interesting than others.
• Silent Hill f (-16%) – A$109 A flowery nightmare from Japan. Looks spooky, sounds spooky, probably is spooky. Silent Hill’s weirdness dialled to max.
• Tales of Arise (-68%) – A$32.20 Gorgeous anime swords, party banter galore, and combat that feels like an action game. JRPG comfort food.

PS4

• Elden Ring (-51%) – A$49 It’s Dark Souls but with a horse and a sandbox. Also more bosses than you’ll ever want to count. Pain never felt so good.
• Persona 5 Royal (-46%) – A$54.40 Stylish teens fighting demons while juggling exams. Honestly, it’s more stressful than high school ever was.
• Far Cry 5 (-66%) – A$34.10 Montana’s cult crisis, solved with explosions, fishing rods and a dog called Boomer. Subtle it is not.

On PC, DOOM Eternal is still one of the tightest shooters around, its rhythmic combat loop designed around heavy metal tracks recorded specifically for its glory kills. Meanwhile, Hades turned death into progression in a way that had me happily grinding just to hear more of its godly banter.

• Space Marine 2 (-50%) – A$44.90 Chainswords, bolters and a main character who screams at everything. Warhammer never looked this beefy.
• Doom Eternal (-90%) – A$5.40 Rip, tear, repeat. Story? Who cares. You’re basically metal album art made playable.
• Hades (-75%) – A$9.10 Die, flirt with gods, die again. Repeat until obsessed. Indie perfection.
