Kentucky State Police arrested Joshua Cottrell at a McCracken County hospital and was arrested and charged him with two counts of murder and tampering with physical evidence.
On Monday, Cottrell’s public defender entered a not guilty plea for him virtually from the Montgomery County Regional Jail.
The courtroom was filled with loved ones of Kennedi and Kayla in support to plead for justice as they continue to honor them.
“I feel like for us it means that he can never harm again. But mainly at the end of the day, it means that Kayla and Kennedi are never forgotten. That they’re not remembered just because of this horrific tragedy. But they’re remembered for the light that they’ve always shed and shine for everybody else,” said former coworker and friend Lacy Stacy.
She said she and other community members are still processing this loss.

“Horrific. Unbelievable. I feel like, you know, I speak for myself and others in the community. It doesn’t seem like it could be real. I feel like we’re still, in mourning, of course, but also just don’t understand how something like this could happen,” she explained.
A preliminary hearing for Cottrell has been set for 11 a.m. on Oct. 6 in district court.
