Redwater High NHS honored for outstanding community service

BOWIE COUNTY, Texas (KTAL/KMSS) — The National Honor Society (NHS) awarded the Redwater Independent School District (RISD) NHS chapter the Service Award of Excellence for the 2024-2025 school year.

Last year, the Redwater High School NHS and First Baptist Church — Redwater raised $1,000 to provide food and utility support for local families.

Students also dedicated time to provide water at the Run the Line Marathon, clean the stadium after home football games, and participate in service projects, such as ringing the bell for the Salvation Army and maintaining Highway 67 through the Adopt-A-Highway program.

Students also volunteer at events, including Straight Street’s Chili Cookoff and Red Lick’s Fall Festival, and read to elementary students.

The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) oversees NHS, and the National Association of Student Councils.

NASSP CEO Ron Nozoe said, “The NHS Chapter Pillar Awards celebrate chapters that truly embody what the National Honor Society stands for—students who don’t just excel academically but actively strengthen their communities.”

“The Redwater ISD chapter demonstrates how powerful it can be when young leaders channel their talents toward meaningful service and positive change.”

RISD Superintendent Dr. Kelly Burns said, “We are incredibly proud of our National Honor Society students and their chapter’s outstanding commitment to service.”

“These students have not only supported local families and community events, but have truly embodied the values of leadership and service, making our schools and community stronger.”

The NHS Chapter Pillar Awards celebrate outstanding NHS chapters across the country. The chapters must have demonstrated activities that exemplify one or all three core NHS values.
