Poplar Grove Market showcases local talent and supports small businesses

POPLAR GROVE, Ill. (WTVO) —The Poplar Grove Lions Club hosted its fall community market Sunday, the second of the year. It included farmers, ranchers, food producers, crafters, artisans, local businesses, and non-profits. This year marks the fourth year of the event, which has grown significantly since its inception.

“Many successful businesses get their start at local markets,” said Kristi Richardson, member of the Poplar Grove Lions Club and village president. “That’s why it’s so important to continue to create hometown markets, as well as the benefits of creating community and vibrant business.”

Kristi Richardson explained that the market began with 30 vendors on West Main Street and has expanded to 54 vendors plus food trucks. The market is held in May and September each year.

Richardson emphasized the importance of supporting local entrepreneurs by providing them opportunities to grow from a smaller scale to a larger scale. She noted that events like these allow vendors to test their products and services in a community setting.

The Poplar Grove community market distinguishes itself by featuring a diverse mix of local businesses, non-profits, farmers, ranchers, artists, and crafters. Richardson stated that about a third of the vendors are from Poplar Grove itself, with others coming from the surrounding counties and Winnebago.

Richardson highlighted the role of the Lions Club in supporting the event, noting that the club’s backing has been instrumental in the market’s success. She encouraged community members to support local businesses and shop local to keep the uniqueness in their towns.

With the support of the Lions Club and the community, the market is expected to thrive and expand in the coming years.
