According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the 6800 block of East 21st Street — which is located on the east side of the city — around 7:13 p.m. to investigate a shooting. When police arrived at the scene, they located a person with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.
IMPD reported that the victim was “awake and breathing” when officers found them. Police have not yet provided any additional updates on the victim’s medical status.
FOX59/CBS4 sent a crew to the shooting scene. That crew found IMPD officers conducting an investigation at the Budget 8 Inn, which is located at 6850 E. 21st St.
The Budget 8 Inn has been the subject of much scrutiny in recent years. Previous reporting indicates five homicides occurred at the Budget 8 Inn between the end 2020 and beginning of 2023.
Another report suggests a person was killed in “execution-like” fashion at the Budget 8 Inn in June 2023. At least one other serious shooting has happened at the Budget 8 Inn since the June 2023 incident. That shooting, which occurred in March 2024, left one person hurt and another in critical condition.
In an interview with FOX59/CBS4 in March 2024, the owner of the Budget 8 Inn — Kartik Patel — said he had installed 40 surveillance cameras around the property to try to curb the amount of crime that occurs at the motel.
It is unclear if IMPD has identified or detained any suspects or persons of interest at this point in its investigation of Monday’s shooting. As of this article’s publication, no additional information on the shooting or the circumstances that led to it had been made available.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
