Mostly sunny and warm Monday, but thunderstorm chances increase for Utah on Tuesday

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Monday, Utah! Look for a few clouds to mix with the sunshine across northern Utah Monday afternoon. Highs will warm above average into the upper 70s to lower 80s. Wall-to-wall sunshine is expected across southern Utah Monday, with highs warming into the low to mid 80s.

Clouds will be on the increase across north and western Utah beginning Monday evening into Monday night. These clouds will be streaming ahead of a west coast front that looks to bring increasing rain and storm chances to the state on Tuesday.

Tuesday will start with scattered downpours and rumbles across NW Utah, with rain and storms increasing across Cache Valley, the Wasatch Front, and Wasatch Back through midday on Tuesday. Showers and storms will likely then move into northeast and eastern Utah Tuesday afternoon into the evening hours.

At this time severe storms are not expected with this activity, but heavy rain, frequent lightning, and gusty winds will all be possible. The northern half of Utah is under a “marginal” risk for flash flooding thanks to the big downpours and slow movement of any storms. Most of the rain and storm chances should wrap up by late Tuesday evening across the state.

High pressure settles back in over the state mid to late week bringing more sunshine and warm temperatures to the region. Highs will be in the 70s for northern Utah, with mid to upper 80s returning to SW Utah.

Looking ahead, our first significant taste of “fall-like” air could be heading to Utah this weekend. A deep trough of low pressure will swing overhead moving into the weekend bringing much cooler weather. Highs will only be in the mid 60s for northern Utah, and low 80s for SW Utah. The mountains of Utah will likely see morning temps in the low to mid 30s with highs only in the 50s.

Due to the strong system dropping into the area, a few isolated to scattered showers may develop, especially over the higher elevations this weekend, but for now it does not look too heavy or anything of a washout.
