HICKORY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The City of Hickory is reminding residents that stealing water from local fire hydrants is illegal and dangerous.

Just in the month of September, three people were charged for stealing water from fire hydrants, officials said.

Stealing water from fire hydrants can have negative impacts on the city’s water system and can pose health risks. It can lead to a higher risk of contamination, damage the water system, reduced fire protection, and higher costs for residents.

Anyone who steals water from hydrants can face fines up to $5,000. The City says the first offense is a Class 1 misdemeanor, and he second or any subsequent violation is a Class H felony.

Businesses that need access to bulk water for construction or landscaping can apply for a permit. To do so, contact the City of Hickory’s Public Utilities Department at 828-323-7427.

Anyone who sees someone stealing water from a Hickory fire hydrant should contact the police department at 828-328-5551.
