Hansen is only the third Chinese-born player to hear his name called in the first round of the NBA Draft.
During NBA Summer League, Hansen played four games, averaging 10.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.3 blocks, but his impacts go far beyond the court.
“When we drafted Yang, I was excited about what those opportunities meant for our organization globally. I think it’s really important for us to make sure we build that relationship,” said Trail Blazers President of Business Operations Dewayne Hankins. “We were number one in the league in social media rankings during Summer League, which I’ve never seen. Most of that was due to the audience that Hansen brings to us. We’ve had incredible explosive growth on Chinese platforms.”
The team only expects more growth in those areas, as Hankins added that the Blazers have hired a Mandarin-speaking social media person.
Hansen’s teammates raved time and again about his play on Monday. In particular, highlighting his footwork and passing ability.
“I think he can really play,” said Blazers guard Damian Lillard. “The first thing that stuck out to me was his feel for the game. He knows the right pass, how to find space to get a quality shot off, he’s physical, and I like his personality.”
