Utah leaders react to death of LDS Church President Russell M. Nelson

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Many of Utah’s political leaders are reacting to the death of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Russell M. Nelson.

The 17th president of the church passed away peacefully shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2025, at his home in Salt Lake City, according to church officials. He was 101.

Gov. Spencer Cox

“Today we mourn the passing of President Russell M. Nelson — a prophet of God, a gentle leader, and a voice for peacemaking,” Cox said. “He built bridges across faith traditions and cultures, serving God’s children throughout the world. Abby and I will forever treasure our moments with him.”

“‘Hail to the Prophet, ascended to heaven!’” Cox wrote on Facebook.

Sen. John Curtis

“Few lives have been lived as fully and faithfully as that of President Russell M. Nelson,” Curtis said. “His remarkable 101 years were a testament to service, faith, and vision. I am grateful for the insight, inspiration, and teachings he shared so generously.”

“As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life that lifted countless people and left an enduring legacy of hope and strength,” Curtis posted on X.

President J. Stuart Adams, Utah Senate

“It is with deep respect and profound sadness that we honor the life and mourn the passing of President Russell M. Nelson, a man of faith, vision and compassion. As President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a distinguished physician, he was a tireless advocate for peace, unity and human dignity. He dedicated his life to healing, uplifting and uniting individuals and communities, both in Utah and around the world,” a news release from Adams states.

“President Nelson’s steady voice in uncertain times was a bridge between communities and a beacon of hope and clarity amid hardship and division. His teachings inspired millions and helped shape a more compassionate and hopeful world.”

“My heartfelt condolences and prayers are with the Nelson family, members of the Church and all who were impacted by his extraordinary life. His legacy of grace, wisdom and goodness will continue to bless Utah and communities everywhere,” Adams said.

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall

“As a pioneering heart surgeon and later as the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, President Russell M. Nelson devoted his life to healing—people and communities alike,” Mendenhall said in a statement. “I extend my deepest condolences to his wife, Wendy, and his family as we honor his extraordinary life.”
