The Prince George’s County Public School District (PGCPS) limited the number of tickets sold to football games. Part of an effort to improve safety at the games.
“It kind of sucks for the kids who just follow sports in general and want to go to games that have friends at other schools [who] are able to go to those games, so that that hurts them,” said Rock Stringfield, a parent.
The security changes followed several fights and a robbery on September 19 outside the football stadium at Wise High School.
Besides more law enforcement officers on hand, tickets to the games, according to PGCPS, must be bought in advance. Only students who attend the schools involved in the game can attend, and they must bring their student IDs.
“I guess it’s a case where some bad apples paint the picture for everybody and everybody suffers for it,” Stringfield said.
PGCPS calls the measures necessary.
“The safety and security of everyone [who] attends our games and comes on our property is of utmost importance to us,” said PGCPS Director of Safety & Security Gary Cunningham.
The new security procedures are not just for football. They will be applied to other school district athletic events.
Charles County Public Schools has also implemented new security procedures at its football games.
They follow DC Public Schools, which increased security at its games earlier this month following several violent incidents, including two stabbings involving teenagers.
