Staff report
Bloomington, Ind. — September 27, 2025
A 29-year-old man was shot and killed Friday night following a disturbance near the intersection of West Howe and South Morton streets in Bloomington, according to police.
Bloomington Police officers, Bloomington Fire Department personnel, and IU Health Ambulance crews were called to the scene around 9:40 p.m. after witnesses reported hearing an argument, a gunshot, and people screaming. Responders found a man on the ground with a gunshot wound to the left side of his upper torso. Despite life-saving efforts at the scene and during transport, the man was pronounced dead at IU Health Bloomington Hospital at 10:28 p.m. Police later identified him as transient.
Witnesses told investigators that the victim and the driver of a dark-colored sedan had been involved in a disturbance near the intersection when the suspect got out of the car, fired a single shot, and fled the scene. The vehicle sped westbound on Howe Street before turning north on Madison Street. Witnesses also reported hearing a woman screaming inside the suspect’s car as it left the neighborhood.
At the scene Friday night, police secured evidence including a shell casing while investigators used flashlights to search the area. A bicycle lay in the street as crime scene tape surrounded nearby condominiums and the roadway.
Police said the suspect and the victim did not appear to know one another. Detectives are asking residents in the area to review security or doorbell camera footage for images of the suspect vehicle entering or leaving the neighborhood.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Chris Scott at the Bloomington Police Department at (812) 339-4477.
The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been announced.
