Officers responded at 5 a.m. Thursday to a 7-Eleven on 1st Street following several reports of an unresponsive driver who had drug paraphernalia in plain sight while his car engine was still running.
The suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Keanu Castro, was found passed out by officers, police said.
“As he was being escorted out of the car, however, Castro decided to place a bag filled with a white substance into his mouth,” said police. “He was repeatedly told to remove the bag from his mouth, eventually spitting it out onto one of our patrol cars after having briefly chewed it. The white substance, believed to be fentanyl, went airborne and exposed one of our officers.”
The officer was rushed to a nearby hospital and is recovering from the incident.
Castro was taken to the Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of multiple narcotics charges and a probation violation.
