Life Time Chicago Half Marathon underway Sunday morning along lakefront on Chicago’s South Side

CHICAGO — The 28th annual Life Time Chicago Half Marathon and 5K is underway Sunday morning along the lakefront on Chicago’s South Side.

The 13.1-mile half marathon began at 7 a.m. in Jackson Park and will also end there. A shorter 5-kilometer race also kicked off at 7:45 a.m., and the Kids Run Chicago is set to start at 10 a.m.

Thousands of runners from around the world are participating in the races.

After leaving the starting line in Jackson Park, half-marathon runners go north, with picturesque views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline. After the turnaround, runners go south on DuSable Lake Shore Drive, getting glimpses of South Side neighborhoods like Kenwood and Hyde Park.

Runners will also spot the Museum of Science and Industry campus as they near the end of the course before finishing up back in Jackson Park at the gilded bronze Statue of The Republic.

Due to the race, a significant portion of DuSable LSD on the South Side, as well parts of Hayes and Richards Drives, will be shut down Sunday morning.

A Finish Festival is scheduled for noon in Jackson Park.

The Life Time Chicago Half Marathon and 5K serves as something of a precursor to the Chicago Marathon, which is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 12, and is the final event this year of the Bank of America Chicago Distance Series.
