Eric Zaucha, who has lived in Ingleside for five years, says two abandoned homes near his property have become repeat dump sites. “This is not a dump site… there’s kids that walk through here. It’s not safe,” he said, noting the trash has led to rat problems inside his home.
Mayor Tom Arceneaux says illegal dumping is a recurring problem across neighborhoods. Through the city’s Block-by-Block initiative, crews have collected six tons of debris and more than 200 tires in Ingleside alone. Still, he says, catching violators in the act remains the biggest challenge.
Shreveport Police are working to increase surveillance with new cameras that send real-time alerts to officers when dumping occurs. Residents who want to request cameras in their neighborhood can call (318) 673-6956.
For properties that appear untouched for long periods, officials say the issue often comes down to whether the property is privately owned or adjudicated. Each neighborhood has a property standards inspector assigned, and residents can look up their inspector’s contact information on the Shreveport’s City website or call (318) 673-6410 to get connected directly.
Property Standards Director Terrence Green urges residents to report dumping immediately and take photos if possible. “If you’ve got a license plate number, that will help SPD prosecute violators,” he said.
Shreveport Green also supports residents by providing tools and supplies for neighborhoods that want to organize their own cleanups.
