Colts lose to Rams, 27-20, drop to 3-1 on the season

LOS ANGELES — Mistakes doomed the Colts on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.

Indianapolis lost to the Los Angeles Rams, 27-20, and fell short of securing their first 4-0 start to a season since 2009.

Miscues from wide receiver Adonai Mitchell negated two Colts touchdowns on the contest.

The first of the errors came 11:32 left in the third quarter. Mitchell fumbled the ball at the goal line after taking a pass he caught from Jones down the left sideline for a 56-yard gain.

The ball ultimately skirted out of the back of the end zone for touchback after Mitchell fumbled it. Accordingly, Indianapolis lost possession and the Rams took over at the 20-yard line.

Had Mitchell been able to hold onto the ball at the end of his scamper, the play would have resulted in a touchdown. The Colts would have led 17-13 if Mitchell scored.

Mitchell also committed a key penalty with just over two minutes remaining in the game. He was flagged for holding on a play that saw running back Jonathan Taylor score a 53-yard rushing touchdown.

The holding penalty negated the touchdown and left the score tied 20-20.

After Mitchell’s holding penalty, the Colts punted the ball back to the Rams. On the first play they ran after receiving the punt, the Rams scored an 88-yard touchdown as quarterback Matthew Stafford connected wideout Tutu Atwell.

On the Colts ensuing drive, quarterback Daniel Jones threw an interception. He was targeting wide receive Michael Pittman Jr. The pas was picked off by safety Kamren Curl at the Los Angeles 44-yard line.

On the game, Jones tossed two interceptions. His first turnover came on the first drive of the game. Curl picked off a pass Jones attempted to throw to wide receiver Adonai Mitchell with 12:55 left in the first quarter.

Sanchez faces heaviest workload of season

Indianapolis punter Rigoberto Sanchez has his busiest day of the 2025 season on Sunday. In total, Sanchez punted four times. He netted 209 yards on those punts and downed two balls inside the 20-yard line.

Prior to Sunday’s contest, Sanchez had only punted once in the Colts’ first three games. Indianapolis did not punt on its first 19 offensive possessions of the year. Sanchez registered his first punt of the year in Indianapolis’ 41-20 win over the Tennessee Titans last week.

The Colts will return to Lucas Oil Stadium next Sunday for a matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders at 1 p.m. The game will air on FOX59.
