Man in custody after deadly hit-and-run in Maplewood
A 46-year-old was arrested Friday in connection with a fatal Maplewood hit-and-run.
Officers were called to a man down in the road on the 4300 block of Maryland Avenue East around 4:30 a.m.
There, they found a 31-year-old man who had injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle. Despite first aid, the man, identified as Abdul Bakr Jafar, was pronounced deceased at 4:54 a.m., police said.
A witness reported seeing a conversion van with a ladder rack hit Jafar and drive off. Investigators were able to get more information and surveillance video of the crash from a nearby home.
Maplewood police announced Friday afternoon that 46-year-old Jose Ronald Hernandez-Pineda was arrested in Sleepy Eye in connection with the crash. The van was found with him at the time of his arrest.
Hernandez-Pineda was arrested on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide, and police suspect alcohol contributed to the crash.
