KCTV Tower Shines Bright Again

Gray Media CBS affiliate KCTV’s broadcast tower is once again a beacon on the Kansas City skyline. On the evening of Sept. 18, after more than two decades in darkness, the 1,042-foot tower was officially relit in a spectacular ceremony — marking a new chapter for one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.

KCTV partnered with the City of Kansas City, Mo., to restore the iconic structure with 98 state-of-the-art, energy- efficient LED fixtures, bringing the tower back to life with vibrant, color-changing displays. The relighting is part of a larger effort to celebrate Kansas City’s spirit and resilience as the city prepares to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“Kansas City is on the world’s stage, and we wanted to do something that reflects the pride we all feel in our community,” said Curtis Miles, KCTV general manager. “Relighting the tower isn’t just about turning on lights — it’s about celebrating Kansas City. We’re proud that KCTV5 can use this iconic tower to highlight the moments, milestones, and movements that make our city shine.”

KCTV plans to use the newly illuminated tower to celebrate Kansas City year-round, lighting it up for holidays, major events, sports victories, and community causes. The tower joins a growing collection of illuminated landmarks across the city, contributing to Kansas City’s evolving visual identity and skyline.

Originally built in 1955, the tower had been dark since 2004 due to aging infrastructure. The station said its return to the skyline now “represents more than a technological upgrade — it’s a celebration of Kansas City’s past, present, and future.

“The relighting ceremony was visible across the metro area, and as the tower continues to glow, it promises to become a lasting symbol of civic pride and celebration for all of Kansas City.”
