Warren Easton’s Jaedon Phillips is a big leader both on the football field and in the classroom.
He has a 4.3 GPA and recorded a 29 on the ACT.
Phillips is in the National Society of High School Scholars and is on the honor roll.
He says his father, and Warren Easton head football coach Jerry Phillips, is a big reason why he’s been able to balance it all.
“He deals with the coaching side, some of the things he taught me. Discipline and mental toughness have translated into the classroom,” Jaedon said. “My mother stays on top of me with the homework. Balancing it is what I do, it’s who I am as a person.”
“As coaches, we always talk about the type of players we want. Do it in the classroom first before the field,” Jerry Phillips said. “That’s why they put student before athlete. To have my son do that and be a torchbearer for me, it serves a purpose. It’s great to see man and I’m so proud of him.”
Prioritizing football is his Plan A, but if that doesn’t work out, he wants to be a lawyer and plans to study political science in college.
“You don’t know when your last snap is. Being a student of the game gives me something to lean back on in case athletics don’t work out,” Jaedon said.
