Baton Rouge police arrest 2 men after 19-year-old shot, killed on Eleanor Drive

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The Baton Rouge Police Department has arrested two men in connection with the shooting death of 19-year-old Joseph Mitchell

Mitchell was shot while walking in the road in the 3900 block of Eleanor Drive.

BRPD developed a suspected vehicle through information from sources and coordinated with Uniform Patrol to find it. On Friday, officers stopped the vehicle after a brief pursuit and a minor traffic crash.

DeKendall Hickman and Larry Thompson were arrested.

Hickman was charged with:

  • First-degree murder.
  • Attempted first-degree murder (4 counts).
  • Illegal use of a weapon.
  • Possession of a machine gun.
  • Possession of Schedule I CDS.
  • Felon in possession of a firearm.
  • Aggravated flight from an officer.

Police said Hickman has prior arrests, including damage to property, aggravated assault-firearm, unauthorized entry, domestic abuse battery, and felon in possession of a firearm.

Thompson was charged with possession of a machine gun, possession of Schedule I CDS, and possession of a firearm with CDS. Police said Thompson had no prior criminal history.
