1 man arrested after a woman was shot, killed on far east side

INDIANAPOLIS — A 19-year-old woman died in an early Friday morning shooting on the far east side.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers received a report of a person shot at an apartment in the 10100 block of John Jay Drive at 3:18 a.m.

When officers arrived, they located an adult female with a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition, where she later died.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as 19-year-old Lanya A. Anderson.

Capt. Don Weilhammer with IMPD said the shooting appeared to stem from a domestic dispute.

“What we know right now is this is some type of domestic disturbance between her and her boyfriend,” Weilhammer said.

Later the same day, police came in contact with a man who was suspected of being involved in the shooting. Initially, he was detained. After consulting with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, he was arrested for murder.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office is assisting and will determine the exact manner and cause of death.
